Many new releases on DVD this week. The only one previously screened here at the site was the Tom Cruise sci-fi film Oblivion. Filmed in Iceland, the look is gorgeous, but the execution is both needlessly convoluted and old-hat, ripping off many better sci-fi films in the process.
Look for reviews of Mud, directed by Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) and starring Matthew McConaughey, The Place Beyond the Pines, directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) and starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, and To the Wonder, directed by Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) and starring an ensemble cast led by Ben Affleck. Those are coming Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
This Friday Andrew and Kyle start their new director feature and are looking to Russia for the next task. Drop by this Friday to find out who!
Saturday sees the release of Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, his follow-up to District 9. A pair of bland-looking studio films in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and We're the Millers along with an intriguing looking biopic of Linda Lovelace, simply title Lovelace, round out the new films. Look for reviews for films released new in theaters this weekend.
Sunday continues our In Appreciation series after Ryan got to write a positive Dear John letter to John Lasseter.
