I couldn't have gone through the day without hearing about this trailer for Mike Newell's adaptation of Great Expectations. It's my favorite Dickens story and Alfonso Cuaron did one hell of an update on it almost a decade ago with Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Anne Bancroft.
Unfortunately, I've seen the story gussied up in period clothing so many times that there isn't much about Newell's version that interests me. Neither performer, young or old, playing the roles of Pip or Estella strike a unique cord. Then there's the problem with Helena Bonham Carter. I've enjoyed her in other films, but between her cackling in the Harry Potter films and her overindulgence in Tim Burton's films I've been completely worn out by her characters. The googly-eyed stare she gives Miss Haversham in those few scenes from the trailer do not fill me with confidence. Still, it's Great Expectations, so googly Carter or no, I will be there.
Tomorrow I'll be back with a review of the Brendan Fraser thriller Breakout.
